University Grants $500 Scholarship Gift to Campbell

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Levin H. Campbell III '48 has been awarded the Ellen Frothingham Scholarship for the coming year, the office of Dean Bender announced yesterday.

This scholarship is bestowed annually on that "Senior who best exemplifies the qualities of excellent scholarship, manliness, and effective support of the best interests of Harvard University."

$500 Stipend

The scholarship was established in 1939 under provisions included in the will of Paul Revere Frothingham, Class of 1886. It provides for a $500 a year stipend. This sum need not be used to pay expenses at the University, and the recipient is permitted to employ it for such purposes as studies abroad.

Campbell served as president of the Student Council in 1946-47, and had ben a member of that group for several terms previously. It was during Campbell's tenure as Council president that the group's current constitution was written in an effort to make the College's student government "more democratic and more efficient."

The former Student Council president resigned of his own accord, thus opening the democratization to the highest ranks, when he was that "A representative Council needs a representative presiding officer."
