Marking the second anniversary of V-J Day, the local chapter of the American Veterans Committee will sponsor an all-College meeting Thursday evening in Emerson D, at which Louis Hartz '40, assistant professor of government, will speak.
Plans for the event were announced yesterday by Stanley G. Karson '48, chapter chairman, after a meeting of the AVC executive council. Karson said this would be the only commemoration at the University of the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.
General Significance
Hartz last night had not announced the subject of his address, but it is believed it will be general in its scope and directed not only to AVC members and other veterans but also to students as a whole.
The speaker is this summer lecturing in one of the largest courses at the college--Gov 3, principles of popular government.
Edwin H.B. Pratt, state AVC chairman, will also address the meeting, according to Karson, and a prominent minister will offer invocation.
Short Message
"The meeting will be short," Karson said last night. "We feel that the end of the war should be remembered by solemn reflection, in order that men will think twice before planning for another war which is bound to be even more disastrous," he continued. "We are making an effort to do this in as effective a manner as possible--by having one whom we feel qualified to speak on the subject appearing before the student body as a whole."
At its regular executive session this week, the AVC made plans for a series of open forums to be held next fall, as well as mapping out membership and general activity drives, to be undertaken next month.
Thursday's meeting will be the second AVC general membership meeting of the summer term.
