Garageless Car Owners Find No Welcome Mats

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Bedding a car down under pampered circumstances in almost as expensive in Cambridge today as the average cost of living in a College dormitory, a survey of available indoor garage space disclosed yesterday.

Finding night parking space to begin with is probably a more difficult proposition with no Indoor Athletic Building equivalent to house the overflow. And instead of inviting side streets to serve the penny-pinching motorist, he will find 141 new parking meter poles cropping up along Garden, Holyoke, Dunster, Plympton, and Linden Streets.

Police Primed

Police headquarters at Central Square yesterday announced that they would vigorously enforce a one hour night parking limit from 2 to 6 o'clock. All violators will be tagged, with one, two, and three dollar fines for successive breaches of the rule. Few open air facilities are available to relieve the bleak situation.

Sole indoor heated garage with a few vacancies remaining on Sunday was the Continental Annex, which opened on the first of the month at 40 Boylston Street and accommodates 325 vehicles. Manager Vincent A. Connors gets $25 a month for reservation, on a nine month contract basis.

Similar rates on an eight month contract are charged by the Cambridge Garage at less accessible 128 Mt. Auburn Street, but they are completely filled, along with the Gulf Oil Station opposite the Freshman Union, the Crimson Garage opposite Kirkland House on Boylston Street, and S. H. McCartney's underground chute on Brattle Square.
