Troubled Trieste rested somewhat easier yesterday as the Allied Military Government announced that a strike of 12000 workers in the port area had come to an end. While it lasted, the work stoppage was 100 percent effective and completely halted the loading and unloading of ships. A general strike call failed, however, when the leading non-Communist union refused to participate.
But Trieste's woes were not entirely over, despite the strike's end, as the United States sent a sharp note to Yugoslavia demanding an immediate end to "irresponsible" ultimatums from Marshal Tito's troops in the Trieste area. The ultimatums mentioned in the protest were issued by Yugoslavs wishing to take over certain positions along the provisional boundary against American wishes. The Yugoslavs generally threatened to use force if necessary, although in most cases the arguments were settled.
The weather: Cloudy, rain, and little change in temperature today with highest in the upper 50's. Rain ending tonight and becoming cooler.
