Valpey Talks Tonight at Season's Opening Rally

Most students will get their first look at Coach Art Valpey tonight when he keynotes the pre-Columbia football rally on the Indoor Athletic Building steps.

In addition to Valpey, Captain Kenny O'Donnell will also address the crowd. Eddie Davis, star right tackle of the 1946 team, will follow Ken; and Chet Pierce, tackle for the last three years, may add a short message.

No Other Speakers

No other members of the team will appear at the rally since Valpey decided that he would rather not have the players keyed up the night before the opener. "I want them to take in a show, or go to bed--lead their own lives that night," he said.

Complete with the Band, a refurbished crew of cheerleaders under the direction of Gerry Fisher '49, and song-shoets, the rally will follow the traditional program; a march from in front of University Hall at 7 p.m. down Holyoke St., to the Houses and back to the Gym for singing, cheering, and speeches.

Cheering Practice

Head cheerleader Fisher promised that the marchers tonight would practice enough songs and cheers so that the Harvard stands will know their signals by game time Saturday. As yet the cheer-leaders have had no time to work out any new routines, but Fisher predicts a far more elaborate assortment before November 20 and the Yale game.
