Harlow Shapley, Director of the College Observatory, was named late Sunday as one of the sponsors of a new committee on loyalty problems set up by the Federation of American Scientists.
From Princeton Came news of the campaign to combat unsubstantiated public defamation" of scientists named in loyalty or security investigations. The federation said that it would seek "fair and full" hearings for these scientists criticised by government agencies and congressional committees.
Condon Case
It cited the case of Edward U. Condon as an "outrageous" example of procedural unfairness, and hit out at present "vicious types of character assassination."
Temporary Chairman of the committee is Dr. W.A. Higinbotham, head of Brook have National Laboratory and vice chairman of the Federation of American Scientists. Members include Princeton professor Albert Eastein and Stanley Livingston of M.I.T.
Other sponsors listed is addition to Shapley included Victor Weisekopf of M.I.T. and Hudson Hoagland of the Worcester Foundation.
