Marathon Squad, Not Yet in Shape, Fears Fast Tufts

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

If anyone burns up the cinders in Saturday's cross country meet with Tufts and Holy Cross, it's going to be Ted Vogel. Vogel, who represented Tufts and the U.S. in this year's Olympics, is someone whom Jaakko Mikkola doesn't expect his runners to catch.

"The squad isn't up to par," Mikkola asserted last night. "Tufts is strong and 'The Cross' usually has some swift trackmen. We can't be expected to do very well."

Mikkola held out more hope for his freshmen crew. He called it a very hopeful looking bunch of runners, but stated that it would be an unknown quantity until after the weekend's triangular meet. "They've only been running for a week now, and we won't be able to see how they're shaping up until they face a little competition."

Saturday's run will be at Franklin Parkm Boston, starting at 3:45 p.m. Vogel, who has run several times in Boston's annual Patriot's Day Marathon, promises to be in good shape.
