Lamar Labors On '53 Squad

By John. R. W. smail

Sisyphus was the fellow who spent all his time in Hades pushing a huge rock up a hill only to have it rill down gain as soon as he reached the top.

Coach Henry Lamar of the freshman football team is Sisyphus in modern dress.

Each year Lamar takes 50 or 60 freshmen and in the course of a season whips them into a team--which promptly passes into the grasping hands of Art Valpey. Next fail he gets 50 or 60 new men . . .

Lamar used the T-formation, but because he likes it, but because practically all of the Varsity's opponents are T teams, and Valey uses the workhorse freshmen to simulate these offensives so he can devise defences.

More Time for Varsity

Henry says that he spends more time for the varsity, what with scouting and helping Valpey throw something new at his Yardlings in practice, than on his own team. "I have to use a name chart for weeks--even after, the first game," he laments.

That first game comes on Saturday at Andover, and Lamar is still learning names, after yesterday's first full pracperiod with his A team.

Assets to the Freshmen are an inside man from last year's Andover team (Andover can hardly know anything about Harvard since Lamar scarcely does), two left-handed quarterbacks (which may or may not be significant), a pretty heavy line ("its still fairly fat, though"), and far rower injuries than might be expected from a week of battering from the varsity. The team also boasts a probable fullback starter named Blitz.

After a time you get used to pushing rocks up a hill.

B Team Leads Off

The freshman B squad will open the Yardling season this afternoon against Rivers:
