Swim Squad Wins First Meet, Beats Old-Timers 38-28

To the surprise of no one, the varsity swimming team defeated the alumni 38-28 Saturday night in the annual varsity annual pre-season meet at the Block-house. In spite of poor times, the varsity managed to paddle out its eleventh straight victories over the oldtimers.

Swimming before nearly 200 spectators. Coach Ulan's sea dogs placed first in six of the eight events. The alumni managed to eke out victories in the first and last events of the meet, the 150-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Team Leaders

Pacing the varsity team were Bob Berke, who won the 220-yard free style event; Joe Fox, this year's captain and winner of the 50-yard free style; Gordon Weir, diving champion; John Steinhart, winner of the 100-yard back stroke; and Dick Wheeler, 100-yard breast stroke winner.

Julie Vietman, Stove Wise, and Chuck Hoeizer led the alumni efforts, Vietman barely nosed out his brother Rone, of the varsity, for a second place in the 100-yard breast stroke and Wise, who anchored the winning 150-yard medley relay, swam in the winning 200-yard free style relay. Hoeizer also swam in both of the alumnl's winning relays.

150-yard medley relay-Won by alumni (Woods, Hoelzer, and Wise) Time- 1:24,

220-yard free style-Won by Berke (V); second, Kinney (V; third, Arthur (A)

50-yard free style-Won by Fox (V) second, Brown (V); third, barker (A).

Diving--Won by Weir (V), 68.3 points; second, Drohan (A); third Aaron (A); fourth, Manheim, (V); fifth Fittes (A).

100-yard free style-Won by Taft (V) second, Hull (V); third, Barnes (A).

100-yard back stroke-Won by Steinhart (V); second, Woods (V for A); third, Baublis (V for A).

100-yard breast stroke-Won by Wheeler (V); second J. Vietman (A); third, R. Vietman (V).

200-yard free style relay--Won by alumni (Hoeizer, Wise, Scott, and Barker).
