Annex Outswims Pembroke, But Basketball Squads Lose

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Radcliffe swimmers, winning eight out of nine events, defeated Pembroke, 52 to 32, in the Annex pool yesterday afternoon. The victory partly atoned for two defeats the Annex suffered in a basketball doubleheader earlier in the afternoon.

Athletic Association swimming chairman Virginia Gossard led her teammates to their triumph by taking first places in the diving and the 20-yard backstroke race, as well as swimming on the winning 80-yard relay team.

Sherich Also Shines

Marty Sherich duplicated Miss Gossard's performance in the 40-yard free style, 20-yard breaststroke, and the medley relay. Radcliffe lost only the backstroke form contest.

Basketball was the dark spot of the afternoon as the visitors from Providence completely outclassed the two 'Cliffe squads, 38 to 12 and 34 to 18. Marry Brandt put up a brave but futile fight by dropping in all six field goals for the Annex in the first game.

Basketball Teams Outclassed

Pembroke shot and seldom missed; Radcliffe seldom got the chance to shoot. Passes didn't connect and plays didn't materialize. The second game, played in alternate 16 minute halves with the first, turned out to be a similar rout. Ellen Guild and Frances Buhrig scored all 18 'Cliffe points.

The following swimmers, scored for Radcliffe: 40-yard freestyle--Sherich, Loring; breaststroke--Merritt; 20-yard backstroke--V. Gossard, Moses; crawl form--Anthony; 60-yard medley relay--Moses, Sherich, Loring; backstroke form--Moses; 20-yard breaststroke--Sherich; 80-yard freestyle relay--Anthony, Blum, V. Gossard, Loring; and diving--V. Gossard and E. Gossard.
