Clark University plays the first golf match in its history today when it meets the varsity at the Dedham Polo and Country Club at 1:45 p.m.
It will also be Clark's first match of the season, logically enough, and that's Harvard's big advantage. Just back from a one-week southern tour, the Crimson already has four games behind it and a decided advantage in practice.
The varsity lost all those games, but they were to southern colleges that have been on the greens since February, and the scores were better than last year. Nothing is known about the Clark team, except that its coach is an ex-Harvard player, Walter Butler, of the 1947 team.
Six Will Play
Coach Bill Barclay will use six of the men from the southern swing, since he won't choose the regular team from the 30 candidates for another two weeks. His squad will include Bill Rickenbacker, Herb Mce, Bob Matson, Dick O'Keefe, Jack Denton, and Sam Seager.
The Dedham club, where all the Crimson's matches are held, is on Westfield Street, just off Route 128.
