Nine Tackles BU in Home Opener

Godin Ready to Pitch Today; Injury May Force Mannino Out

By Peter B. Taub

Harvard opens its home baseball season at 3:45 p.m. today against Boston University. Ira Godin, with exactly three days' rest after his four-hour job on Navy, will start for Coach Stuffy McInnis' team.

There may be one change is the lineup that hustled its way to the League victory over the Middles and lost two games which could have been won with a single base hit.

Petrillo May Start

Third baseman Eric Mannino's legs, which forced him out of the lineup last spring, have been giving him trouble again. He was limping at the end of yesterday's practice, and Pete Petrillo may start at third this afternoon. Mannino is leading the team in batting with a 429 average.

McInnis had nothing but praise for his club's performance on the southern swing. "The Navy game was the best game I ever saw," he said. "Beautiful plays, beautiful plays. I thought they'd blow wide open down south." Actually, the Crimson made only four errors all in the infield--during the three-game junket.

Meanwhile, at BU, Coach Mel Collard has no outstanding players but he does have a balanced team which has been bolstered by a host of sophomores up from last year's undefeated freshman squad.

No-Hitter in '47

Bill Tighe, veteran righthander who gained fame two years ago when he pitched a no-hitter in his first mound appearance, will start for the Terriers. A slender senior from Ashland, he finished the 1948 season with 30 straight scoreless innings.

This is BU's season-opener. With Godin firing away, with his mates providing the timely hitting and stellar fielding they showed they are capable of on Saturday--it could be an unpleasant 1949 christening for the intowners.

The probable lineups: HARVARD  BU Dunn, ss  Rickson, ss Caulfield, lf  Foley, 3b Crosby, c  Sheehan, 2b Coulson, 1b  Edwards, cf Howe, rf  Mills, 1b Moffle, cf  Bevins, c Mannino or Petrillo, 3b  Winkler, rf Cavanaugh, 2b  Insani, lf Godin, p  Tighe, p
