Rockefeller Gives $5 Million For Business School Needs

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Five million dollars from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. will go toward meeting the $20,000,000 needs of the Business School. President Conant announced Thursday night.

Rockefeller's pledge was made on condition that it be matched by another $5,000,000 in gifts or pledges from others by July 1, 1950. Rockefeller said that the gift expressed his conviction that the Business School was making "most significant and objective contribution . . . to raise the technical standards and to broaden the sense of social responsibility of the leaders of business."

David Expresses Appreciation

Dean David of the Business School, in accepting Rockefeller's pledge said yesterday that he welcomed the opportunity "to express our deep appreciation to Mr. Rockefeller, not only for his generous offer of financial assistance but also for his expression of confidence in the School. His approval of the School's program coming as it did after a thorough study, gives the faculty and me real encouragement."

Rockefeller asked that the money be used toward the construction and partial endowment of a classroom building to be named in memory of his father-in-law. Senator Nelson W. Aldrich of Rhode Island, who died in 1915.

New Quadrangle

The building will form part of a new quadrangle behind Baker Library, central building in the present Business School group east of the Stadium. Also projected for the new quaddrangle is a student building. The two buildings will be constructed at an estimated combined million dollars.

Other Rockefeller family gifts to Harvard during the last half century include funds for the Medical School, Divinity School, Fogg Art Museum, Germanic Museum, and Law School, as well as the University as a whole.
