College Upperclassmen, Grad Schools Register Today; University Enrollment Due to Drop 700

Less Than 5000 Men Expected at College For Post-war Low

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Three thousand eight hundred and thirty upperclassmen will run the Memorial Hall obstacle race today as the College takes another slash in its enrollment and winds up with less than 5000 students for the first time since the war.

University officials expect a student body of 4950 after today's rush is over, the figure includes 1,120 freshmen-the smallest post-war class-and 234 returning upperclassmen who registered last week.

Reducing Diet

The enrollment drop is in line with Provost Buck's plans to reduce the College to 4,300 by 1951. This is the first year that Harvard's reducing program is working out, since the Dean's Office miscalculated the effects of the draft last year and ended up with 400 more students than it expected.

As a result of the lower registration, no freshman has to bunk in at the Blockhouse this fall, and the Houses can continue to deconvert. Seventy-eight dormitory beds have been set up in Claverly and Wigglesworth in case too many upperclassmen sign up, but the College doesn't expect to need them.

Registration Down, Tuition Up

The lower enrollment has also meant the new $600 tuition. According to Provost Buck, the College would suffer a $400,000 deficit if it continued on the old tuition rate this year. The $600 fee is expected to keep Harvard in the black even when it slips to a normal 4300 registration.

Veteran enrollment in the College has also taken a steep plunge. Only 100 ex-GI's showed up in the Class of 1953, leaving 800 less in the whole College.

Times

Registration time today is 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon for students named Abatini to Lyxor, and 1 to 4 p.m. for Mass through Zyzyss. Latecomers can take advantage of a joint registration from 4 to 5 p.m., but after that there's a $10 fine and Administration Board wrath.

The regular hawkers will be on hand both morning and afternoon, with armfuls of free literature and dotted lines.
