Fencers Register First Win, Defeat Engineers Squad

Rene Perey's varsity fencers finally needed their first win of the season last night in the Blockhouse, beating MIT, 20 1/2 to 6 1/2.

After two losses and a tie to Princeton, the Crimson could not be stopped as they took the foil matches, 7 to 2, and the saber, 8 to 1. Only in the epee, which the varsity took 5 1/2 to 3 1/2, was the match relatively close.

The Crimson took control at the start of the evening. Then Chris Martin dropped the first falls match, but the varsity came back to score six successive wins.

Captain Ray Frankman, Eric Sollce, John Gay, and Joe Overholser sparked the team, each registering three wins.

A double touch in the epee on the deciding point between John Smith and his Engineer opponent led to a split in one of the matches.

The summary:

Foils: Frankman won 3, lost 0; Sollce 3-0; Martin 1-2. Saber: Gray 3-0; Levine 2-0; Pieerce 1-0; Carter 2-1. Epce: Overholser 3-0; Smith 1 1/2 1 1/2; Morton 1-2.
