Exeter Tops Yard Lacrosse Squad, 15-6, on Big Rally
For 30 minutes yesterday the freshman lacrosse team seemed on its way to the biggest upset of the year. At the end of the first half, the Yardlings held a 5 to 4 lead over heavily-favored Exeter, one of the powers in scholastic lacrosse.
With the start of the third period, however, the Red and Grey exploded. Before the rumbling died away, Exeter had scored 11 goals to crush the freshmen, 15 to 6.
The Yardlings played some of their best lacrosse of the year during the first half. Charging aggressively from the start, they grabbed a two-goal lead within five minutes on sharp shots by Hank Wood and Don Stewart. Exeter managed to gain the lead, but goals by Wood, Ron Huebsch, and Norm Hatch gave the Crimson its halftime advantage.
After the intermission, though, the Yardling defense weakened, and Exeter, led by Tom Corcoran (four goals, two assists), John Fish (one goal, five assists), and Jim Felstiner (four goals, two assists) scored almost at will.
