Books are cheaper than ever. Square literary merchants, aware that students tended to buy books at the Coop and take advantage of the patronage refund, craftily decided to squash the competition by lowering their own prices ten percent.
Each bookseller believed that the rakeoff was his personal brainchild and sent postcards to students announcing the "exclusive bargain" at his particular shop.
Independent of each other, nearly all the vendors had the same idea. Today most books for sale around the Square are going at ten percent below par.
