F.B.I. Is Investigating Harvard' Lynch Says

Boston Office 'Cannot Comment' on Claim

By Philip M. Cronin

City Councillor John D. Lynch said yesterday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been in Cambridge the last few days, investigating the names on the "Reducators" list. Sixty-eight faculty members are called Communists. Communist sympathizers, or Fellow-Travelers in this document.

Lynch also said that F.B.I. agents had been talking with Chief of Police John R. King about the list. King denied this statement, saying "no F.B.I. man has been in my office today or any day this week."

"Since the F.B.I. has taken over," Lynch said, "I will not bring up any more Communist control bills. The F.B.I. has a wider area to cover and I will give them whatever help I can."

No Probe of List

The Boston Bureau of the F.B.I. stated that they could not give out any information on their activities here. But an official said that any investigation would be conducted on an individual basis. "Since the Cambridge City Council is such a notoriously fiery bunch," he went on, "I would not put too much weight on this (Lynch's) statement."

The Bureau pointed out that the investigation would be started on order from Washington to look into the alleged subversive activities of certain individuals. An entire list such as "Reducators" would not be investigated.

Meanwhile, the legal opinion on the list was still in the hands of the City Solicitor. He is not expected to give an opinion until Monday afternoon's Council session.

Lynch decided not to attempt passage of any mere Communist control bills because he believes that the federal government is fully capable of dealing with the situation.
