Unseasonaby warm weather has out down skating time on the new rink this week and forced varsity hockey coach Cooney Weiland to hold his opening practice sessions in the evening.
Approximately 50 candidates for the varsity squad have been drilling this week, and more will be out next week when fall sports are finished.
Notable absentees are Dick Clasby and Jeff Coolidge. Clasby says he will be out Monday. Coolidge may be held up by his knee injury.
The team began scrimmaging Monday and has already had considerable contact work. Charlie Flynn, freshman goalie last year, took a puck in the mouth Tuesday. It knocked out a tooth and required six stitches.
Besides soft ice, Weiland's biggest problem so far is finding replacements for Amory Hubbard and Walt Greeley, last season's high scorers lost through graduation. He has his same returning defense lineup, with Ed Mrkonich, Jeff Coolidge, Tony Patton and Ned Almy back in the lineup.
