DISTORTED IMPERIALISM

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

I deeply regret that I again find it necessary to take strong issue with the manner in which the CRIMSON handles materials which come its way.

In brief, I must state that the presentation of the interview with me on China presents a distorted account of what was said. No differentiation is made between strongly held views on the present and speculations on the distant future. Careful qualifications are ignored and statements are made which were never uttered by me.

For the present however, may I simply comment on the headline which is nothing less than grotesque. There was speculation that Communist China might ultimately develop its own expansionisms but it nowhere stated that "Mao's imperialism may instigate a Chinese-Soviet War."

I realize the CRIMSON'S need for brevity. If brevity can not be combined with accuracy, it would perhaps be best not to feature articles on highly complex matters. Benjamin I. Schwartz   Assistant Professor of Far Eastern History
