Lamar Calls Disputed Fight 'One of Safest' Title Bouts

State Boxing Commissioner Henry N. Lamer, Football and boxing coach, said yesterday he thought the Jimmy Carter Tommy Collins light weight beat was one of the safest championship fights in the history of the ring.

Lamar said this was largely due to the fact that the bout last Friday was the first championship bout in which the mandatory eight-count rule was in effect. The rule requires that a fighter who is knocked down must remain on the canvas for at least eight counts.

The boxing commission picked referee Tommy Rawson, Lamer said, on his record of handling other championship bouts and fighters.
