Tiger 150's Defeat Varsity; J.V., Yardling Crews Win

An undefeated Princeton varsity 150 pound crew easily defeated Yale by a length and Harvard by two lengths to win the Goldthwait Cup at Derby, Saturday, in New Haven.

The Crimson J.V. and Yardling light-weights kept undefeated records intact with respective firsts over Princeton and Yale.

Strong winds and choppy water made rowing difficult for the early two races. The J.V. and '56 shells finished in 7.10 and 7.105 minutes, while the Tiger eight crossed in the winning time of 6.45.

Early Lead

The highly-rated Princeton varsity quickly moved to an early lead and never gave water from then on. Yale lagged a length behind most of the race, keeping its stroke at a high 36. From the start, the Crimson shell stroked by Captain Dick Lincoln dropped four lengths off the pace and was unable to catch up. It crossed the finish line six seconds later than Princeton, three behind Yale.

The J.V. boat, with two wins to its credit, waited a minute before making its bid, then jumped a length ahead of Princeton. Understroking both boats with a 31-32, the J.V.s never lost their lead over the mile and five-sixteenths race.

They crossed a length in front of the Orange and Black shell, which in turn heat out Yale by a dock length.

The freshman eight stroked a 31 over the Henley distance, leading by a length until a closing Princeton sprint cut the gap in half. Yale lagged four lengths behind the winner, with the time of 7.27 minutes.

Coach Ted Reynolds said the varsity had rowed better than in its unsuccessful race last week against M.I.T. He did not say whether he expects to make changes in the lineup.
