Buses cannot be substituted for street cars in Harvard Square, M.T.A. officials said yesterday, despite a request by Cambridge City Manager John J. Curry.
Curry's proposal resulted from a survey made by the Cambridge Police and Traffic Board, which revealed that the "safety islands" designed to protect passengers leaving a street car have caused 98 accidents during the past two years. His plan called for the use of buses on Massachusetts Avenue from Harvard Square to Arlington, thus eliminating the islands.
Buses would have to make a complete turn-about in Harvard Square, company spokesmen said. This would increase the traffic congestion already caused by buses using the Square as a parking spot.
