Investigation into the disappearance of Edward L. Gates, Jr. '56 revealed yesterday that the Winthrop House sopomore had taken a passport and $250 with him when he left his room on Oct. 6.
Police also discovered the shipping news page from the Oct. 3 edition of The New York Times in his desk drawer. The page was folded to the schedule of incoming military transports.
Gates had served three years in the Marine Corps, returning to college only this fall. Since he had spent 22 months in Japan, police speculated that Gates might have traveled to the West Coast to meet a friend on a transport arriving from that country.
