The University teaches the second largest number of foreign languages in this country, according to a survey made recently by the Modern Language Association.

Columbia led the survey with instruction in 42 languages, while Harvard and Yale rank second and third, offering 26 and 25 languages, respectively.

Thirty-eight of the 971 colleges and universities polled reported that they taught no modern foreign languages, and 493 said that their instruction was limited to French, Spanish, and German.

French Prevails

The survey revealed that French is the most widely-taught language in the country, being offered at 905 institutions. Spanish is available at 867 universities, German at 825, and Italian at 212.

Columbia gives courses in Bengali, Korean, Hindi, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Azerbaijani, and others besides the principal European and Asian languages.
