Sociologist Advocates Courses on Drinking At Women's Colleges

"The responsibility of a woman's college is to let its students know what is going on in the world, and in doing this, discourage them from alcoholism," Dr. Albert D. Ullman, chairman of the Tufts sociology department, declared yesterday.

Speaking on a WNAC radio broadcast entitled "Alcoholism is Everybody's Business," Ullman cited the fact that the number of female dipsomaniacs in Massachusetts is increasing rapidly.

"After all," Ullman said, "thousands of girls and women must face up to alcoholism as it is affecting their parents, husbands, business associates and friends. And of course, as authorities have stated, thousands of women are fighting this illness themselves!"

Ullman explained that Tufts has held seminars on drinking for seven years. "The seminars have become so popular," he said, "that we have inaugurated classes on this subject in other departments to take care of the overflow." In answer to a question, Ullman said that he saw no need for courses on alcoholism in grammar schools.
