The Eliot House Dramatic Group will meet next week to reconsider its previously announced schedule of productions for next year, after some internal pressure to reduce the scope of its ambitious program.
The Drama Group met with Eliot tutors a few weeks ago, shortly after a program had been announced for next year that included "Oedipus Rex," Sheridan's "The Critic," "Henry IV," Parts I & II, Shaw's "Heartbreak House," and "Midsummer Night's Dream."
"Oedipus Rex" and "The Critic" will be given next fall as planned, but next week's meeting will decide on the rest of the program.
The reported reason for the meeting was that Faculty members questioned the advisability of the program. Doubt was expressed concerning "the number of plays, their timing, and the qualifications of the group to do them."
One problem suggested by a Faculty member was that if too many dramatic productions follow one upon another, students who take part in them may have no time to study.
One Faculty member suggested that the additional problem was raised by the amount of time the Drama Group took up the Dining Hall, but John J. Conway, Allston Burr Senior Tutor, denied this emphatically, saying "the Group has made such a contribution to the House that it is always welcome to the use of the Dramatic Hall."
