Robin Roberts of the Philadelphia Phillies was within two outs of an opening day no-hitter yesterday when Alvin Dark of the world champion New York Giants singled in the ninth. Roberts gave up two more hits but hung on to win, 4 to 2.

Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees pitched a two-hitter as the Yanks crushed the Washington Senators, 19 to 1. At Ebbets Field, Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6 to 1.

In the other American League game, the Kansas City Athletics met their first defeat in history when Steve Gromek and the Detroit Tigers trimmed them by a 10 to 2 score.
