Tennis Team Unbeaten on Spring Trip

The varsity tennis team enjoyed one of its most successful southern trips in recent years, as it swept all seven of its matches from the University of North Carolina, Duke, Navy, the Byrd Park Tennis Association, and the Country Club of Virginia.

The final win, from Navy, 9 to 0, was certainly the most important of the trip since it was the opening match of the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis League season. This win also showed that the varsity will definitely be a strong contender for the league title, since Navy, on its cold and windy courts, is always a tough customer in its home matches.

Against North Carolina, a team greatly weakened by graduation losses and by the absence of its coach, the varsity won 29 out of 30 matches in two days.

The varsity met the first team of approximately its own caliber when defeated Duke 7 to 2 and 8 to 1, and this match provided the outstanding individual performance of the trip. After Dale Junta had bowed to Duke's Lief Beck, 6-2, 4-6, 8-6, in the first day's play, Steve Gottlieb took over the top position to completely out manuever Beck for a handy 6-1, 6-2 win the following day.

Acording to coach Jack Barnaby, "Gottlieb's win from Beck was a great display of excellent court generalship. Beck threw everything at him, and Steve stopped him cold."

The varsity also downed the Country Club of Virginia, 8 to 1, and topped the Byrd Park Tennis Association, 12 to 5.

On the whole, the varsity's southern performance showed that although Yale and Princeton will be favored for the Eastern title, the Crimson will have to be considered as a very serious contender.
