Chi Heads New Committee, Favors Membership in NSA

Four student groups favoring College participation in the National Student Association yesterday joined to form the Harvard Committee for the National Student Association.

Representatives from the Freedom Council, the Liberal Union, the Society for Minority Rights, and the Islamic Society met and elected Emile C. Chi '57-3, president of the "temporary" organization.

Chi stated that "The purpose of the newly-formed committee is to inform Harvard students of NSA's function and operation with an objective of having Harvard reaffiliate with NSA." He hoped to accomplish these aims by distributing information on NSA throughout the College. This information will be in the form of a brochure, written by the Committee.

So far, said Chi, the Committee has done nothing requiring funds. He was unable to give information regarding the possible revenue sources with which to publish the projected brochure. "We will cross that bridge when we come to it," he stated.

They unanimously endorsed the proposed referendum of the student body on the question of NSA membership. Chi said he, and probably some others, will represent the newly-formed committee at the open Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Chi announced that the Committee hopes to have whatever other organizations are interested in its cause at future meetings. Attending the first meeting were Chitranjan Kapur '60, member of the Student Council; Paul Sigmund 5G, former Vice President of NSA; Larry Johnson, International Vice President of NSA; Bakhtiyar Ali Kahn '59, Secretary of the Islamic Society; Derek T. Winans '60, Richard Allison '60, and Jonathan Porter '60, Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer respectively of the Freedom Council; and Roger Algase '59, President of the Harvard Liberal Union.

Three sophomores, William M. Bennett, Laurence M. Johnson, and Robert K. Johnson, will also present a petition for a student-body referendum on the question of NSA membership at the open Council meeting.
