Rain Ends Varsity Tennis Match

Driving rain and social engagements forced the Princeton tennis team to cancel Saturday's match with the varsity after about half an hour of play. At that point, the Crimson was leading in eight of the ten singles matches and was tied in the other two.

Coach Jack Barnaby said afterwards that he was "extremely proud of the boys for really tearing into Princeton. A fine upset win was in the making over the team that beat us 13 to 2 last spring," he added.

When the rain caused play to stop, Barnaby arranged for the use of indoor courts later in the afternoon. However, all-club-weekend was in progress at Princeton, and the Tigers had 6:55 plane reservations. Thus, they decided not to continue the match.

At first singles, Crimson captain Dale Junta was even with Jim Farrin, his Princeton counterpart, 4-4. Junta, playing better than he has since suffering a back injury in early April, showed signs of returning to his peak.

Larry Sears, hitting beautiful drop shots and lobs, had won his first set, 6-2, and was leading 4-2 in his second. Tim Gallwey, Ned Weld, Fred Vinton, Bill Wood, Pete Krogh, and Laurie Pratt had also won their first sets.
