HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
LONDON, Feb. 19--Peace came to Cyprus today after four years of violence. A five-party conference reached agreement on independence for the island after 81 years under the British flag.
An historic document establishing the Mediterranean island as a republic was initialed tonight in a London hospital room by the prime ministers of Britain, Greece and Turkey.
Archbishop Makarios, 45-year-old exiled leader of the Greek Cypriots, ended by signing the agreement after dropping earlier objections to some of its clauses.
With Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazil Kutchuk--who also signed--Makarios accepted Britain's proposals that military bases on Cyprus remain under British control.
Beck Found Guilty
TACOMA, Wash., Feb. 19--Dave Beck, millionaire ex-president of the giant Teamsters' Union, was found guilty by a federal court jury today of evading $240,000 in income taxes.
Beck was remanded to the custody of a U.S. marshal and taken to jail soon after the jury announced its verdict at 3 p.m.
End of Heart Disease Seen
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19--Ultimate decisive victory over heart disease, including large-scale prevention, is possible if research is highly accelerated and intensified, Dr. Howard Sprague of the Harvard Medical School said today.
Dr. Sprague keynoted the reports at a symposium of several doctors. The theme developed was that new and better surgical and medical treatment and diagnostic methods as well as advances towards prevention can be expected, provided continuous and generous support is given for heart research.
