Hawaii Jubilant As House Votes On Statehood Bill

WASHINGTON, March 12--Hawaii, enchanting paradise of the Pacific, won statehood today.

Only a day behind the Senate, the House voted overwhelmingly to make Hawaii the 50th state.

Joy and jubilation spread instantly from Washington to Honolulu, by way of an open telephone line.

After the 1960 census, Hawaii would be entitled to two House members by reason of her population and size.

Macmillan in Bonn

BONN, Germany, March 12--British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer conferred for three hours today on Western measures to counter the Soviet threat to Berlin.

Macmillan said on arrival he was convinced there should be talks with the Soviets this summer. He urged the West to adopt a flexible position.

"We all stand together but in the methods of defense we must remain elastic," he said.

Nasser Denounces Kassem

DAMASCUS, Syria, March 12--President Gamal Abdel Nasser of the United Arab Republic wooed Iraq's people today and denounced their premier as a man trying to spread a Communist reign of terror across the Arab world.

Nasser renewed his attack on Premier Abdel Karim Kassem in a biting discussion of the Mosul rebellion before flag-waving student demonstrators at the presidential palace in Damascus.
