Together, "the family magazine of the Methodist Church," is offering cash awards to the college students who write the best articles on "Why I Go to Church." The announced purpose of the contest is to determine the vitality of campus religion.
The contest, open to all college students, was inspired by a magazine article by a University of Oregon junior, entitled, "God Roars in the Pines." In the article the student criticized the Church for falling to give youth "a cause worth living for, a cause to die for."
The theme of the articles may be regraded "as a topic to be expanded or embroidered by personal experience," the magazine instructs. Entries should be between 2000 and 2500 words in length and must be "Informative, sincere, and interesting."
