NBA Western Division All-Stars Top Favored Easterners, 153-131

SYRACUSE, N.Y., Jan. 14--Elgin Baylor hustled out of a sick bed and, helped by Oscar Robertson, Bob Pettit and Clyde Lovellette, led a first quarter drive tonight that carried an underdog West team to a record-breaking 153-131 victory over the East in the National Basketball Association All-Star game.

A standing room crowd of 8,016 in War Memorial Auditorium saw Baylor, bedded with a fever earlier in the day, launch a furious early assault that buried the East with a steady succession of fast breaks resulting in easy baskets for the West. The West 153 points topped the previous mark of 130 set by the East in 1953.

In winning its fourth of 11 All-Star games, the West scored a record 47 points in the first quarter, taking a 23-point lead and breaking the mark of 38 points set by the East two years ago.

West Sets Early Lead

Baylor, the Los Angeles star, sank a layup and a freethrow in the second minute, giving the West a 5-2 lead, and the East trailed the rest of the way. Baylor scored four more points in the next two minutes as the West ran up an 11-4 lead.

Robertson, the ace rookie from Cincinnati, and veterans Pettit and Lovellette from the St. Louis Hawks, took up the attack that didn't give the favored East a chance. In the first quarter alone, Robertson scored 13 points, Pettit 9, Lovellette 8, and Baylor 7.

Wilt Chamberlain, league scoring leader of the Philadelphia Warriors, was so harassed by Lovellette's glove-tight defense that he scored only 12 points, and was held without a field goal until the fourth quarter. He wound up with two field goals and eight free throws.

Pettit was the game's leading scorer with 29 points, while Robertson, voted the most valuable player, had 23. Lovellette had 21. Baylor was withdrawn from the game after eight minutes and was used intermittently, winding up with 15 points.
