STUDENT DEMONSTRATION

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

Last a false impression of last Saturday's student demonstration on the Boston Common result from the erroneous report which appeared in Sunday's Boston Globe, I would like to clarify two matters of policy for the record:

(1) The Globe article quoted me directly as saying that an invasion of Cuba would lead to nuclear war. I never said anything of the sort.

(2) The article said that I believed the United States should bomb the Soviet missile bases in Cuba. This statement was taken completely out of context. What I did say was that if the bases could be proven a dangerous threat to American or world security, and if the Russians did not withdraw peacefully (as they now seem to be doing), then I would favor a pin-point bombing of the bases rather than an invasion seeking the ruthless destruction of the present Cuban government.

The Globe's piece of careless reporting is an example of Boston's slipshod journalism. Such haphazard coverage of this event makes one wonder what distortions appear in the Boston press's presentation of the larger issues which occasioned this student protest.
