English 10 Enrollment Exceeds Expectations; 110 Given No Section

The unexpectedly high enrollment in English 10 has forced the English Department to cut out sections for the 110 seniors taking the course and close further enrollment as of yesterday.

Nearly 600 students have decided to take the survey of English literature, which is being given for the first time in many years. The course's planners, however, had only expected from 200 to 250 students, and the high number came as a complete surprise, according to Larry D. Benson, head tutor in the course.

Benson has already added as many section men as the Department would allow, but there weren't enough to go around, he reported. The section-less seniors, however, can drop the course at midyears.

Enrollment Drop in '63-'64

Benson attributed the influx to the backlog of students who have never been able to take a general survey course in English literature. As a result, he expects a big drop in the course's enrollment next year.

"I know we've made a lot of people upset, and they are justified in feeling that way, but there was nothing we could do about it," Benson said. He was particularly concerned about the seniors not majoring in English.

"For some non-English seniors, this is their "first English course, and they are justifiably worried about taking exams, for instance, without the chance to learn the approach and language of literature analysis in sections," Benson said. But, he added, "Nothing can be done about it."
