Dean Grants Freshmen Longer Parietal Hours

Freshman parietal hours will be liberalized this year to give freshmen the same privileges as upperclassmen on selected nights throughout the year.

The Freshman Dean's office announced yesterday that the new plan will be run on a "proctorial unit" basis. Individual proctors will decide both the number of nights and the specific dates when parietals will be extended until midnight. The proctors must remain in their entries throughout the evening.

In the past, extended parietals have been granted only for entry parties. These required that girls remain in designated rooms. Under the new system, on nights when parietals are extended a freshman may entertain in his own suite until midnight.

Never Before

Previously this privilege has been granted only until 7 p.m. Sunday through Friday and until 8 p.m. on Saturday.

"I think that individual entries will probably not have more than three or four of these extensions per term," L. Fred Jewett '57, Assistant Dean of Freshmen, said yesterday. Dean von Stade remarked that "on nights when his own entry doesn't have extended parietals, the more gregarious student could probably get himself invited to other open entries if he wished."

Week Ends Only?

Extensions are permitted on any night when there is neither a football game nor a freshman-sponsored activity, but Jewett noted that in almost every case, the extra privileges will fall on either a Friday or a Saturday in order to avoid interfering with studies.

The charged parietal hours are largely the result of an HCUA report prepared a year ago by Evan A. Davis '66, past-chairman of the Freshman Affairs committee, and then revised and presented to Dean von Stade. The proposal was approved last week by Dean Monro and the Administrative Board.
