Matmen Destroyed 30-4; Springfield Uses Muscle

By Lee H. Simowitz

Springfield paraded a brawny chorus line of wrestlers into the IAB last night, and like any good chorus line they looked alike and performed alike; they won and won and won until Harvard was crushed, 30-4.

The Springfield wrestlers resembled one another enough to be brothers; each had unusually powerful shoulders and arms, and most of the Harvard team found them virtually impossible to ride or control.

Two of the Maroons were, in fact, brothers: Co-captain John Cerra, who stopped Howie Durfee of Harvard 2-0 at 147 pounds, and 177-pounder Joe Cerra, who shut out the Crimson's Chris Wickens 5-0.

Harvard could score only a pair of draws. Howie Henjyoji, at 123 pounds, held a 9-7 lead over Springfield's Pete Digregario in the third period, but with 10 seconds remaining Digregario scored three points on a lightning takedown and predicament. Riding time lifted Henjyoji to a 10-10 draw. Ed Franquemont also fought to a 6-6 standoff with the Maroon's Bill Ellis at 152.

In other matches, Springfield's Jeff Sadowsky downed Mike King 5-0 at 130; Jim Anderson edged Tom Gilmore of evening Harvard 6-4 at 137; Frank Peraino of Springfield beat Jeff Grant 8-0 at 167; and Neil Stilphen defeated Crimson heavyweight Tack Chace 8-4.

The Maroon's other co-captain, Dale Winter, collected the only fall of the evening by pinning Dave Worchester at of their 157-pound match.

Harvard Captain Ben Brooks was decisioned 7-5 by Paul Schmuts at 191.
