HUAC Requests Change in 'Minor Sports' Category

The Harvard Undergraduate. Athletic Council voted unanimously last night to recommend that the classifications "major and minor" sports be abolished.

The catagories, "varsity intercollege sports" and "club sports" would replace the present designations. The Faculty Committee on Athletic Sports, which has the final word, will vote on the issue at their March 1 meeting.

The HUAC called for the recognition of golf, fencing, and skiing as varsity intercollegiate sports with the same status as the 15 sports currently denoted as major sports by the Faculty Committee. Riflery and sailing would become "club sports" with the same official status as pistol, Karate, cricket, and rugby.

James T. Campen '65, who introduced the proposal, said that "the terms major and minor sports are out of step with the other Ivy Schools. The big differences between major and minor sports are prestige, publicity and financial support."
