Tiger Mat Fray Could Determine Ivy Second Spot

Harvard walks into what may be its toughest Ivy League wrestling match next to Cornell when it meets Princeton today at Princeton.

The Tigers, after finishing last year with a dismal 1-9 record, have come on strong this year as the most likely challengers to Harvard for second place in the league. They have beaten Columbia, Brown, and Penn in their Ivy matches to date, and own a 7-4 record overall.

Princeton's most impressive accomplishment this year was losing by only a single point to Rutgers, 17 to 16. Rutgers' memory is painful for Harvard wrestling followers; it demolished the Crimson this month, 26 to 8.

The Tigers' best men are sophomore Paul Arnow, who will probably meet Ed Franquemont at 152, and Julian McPhillips, another sophomore who may be too much for Bill Malugen at 191. Captain Tom Gilmore of Harvard will wrestle captain Brian Baker of Princeton at 137.

Undefeated heavyweight Tack Chase heads the Crimson lineup, unchanged from the Springfield meet except at 167, where Dave Worcester will sub for ailing Chris Wickens.

Last year, in a match that was televised locally, the Crimson downed Princeton, 22 to 9. A loss then would have meant chiefly embarrassment, but a loss today could cost Harvard dearly in the Ivy League standings.
