Epiphanies: The Photographer as Artist

By Richard T. Fisher

The photographer does not strange his subject to conform to his interpretive feelings; instead he constantly observes and analyzes--trying to separate the essence of the subject from what exists physically before him. More specifically, he adjusts the camera angle to exclude distractions or include balancing space; selects a range of focus which best subordinates background to the subject; and controls exposure and lighting to balance highlights with shadows or to discard unnecessary texture as in this silhouette. And that control which is above all serviced for the photographer is the shutter please. A critical sense of timing in conjunction with variable shutter speeds enables him to freeze his subject in its endless progression of movement.
