Hockey Team Blasts Princeton; Newton Tends Net in 4-1 Victory

By Robert P. Marshall jr.

Dexter Newton made 30 saves in his first varsity start and four forwards put in a goal apiece as the Harvard hockey team skated to an easy 4-1 win over Princeton at Watson Rink last night. It was the kind of game where the coach's only concern was making sure everyone got to play.

If the outcome was ever in doubt, it was only for the first 86 seconds. At that point, the brand new all-Canadian line put in the Crimson's first goal.

Don Grimble had the whole net to shoot at from point blank range after Tiger goalie Graeme Flanders blocked center Pete Miller's shot from in front. Left wing Gordie Price set up Miller's shot with a pass out from the corner.

The rest of the first period passed by dully, but when the second session opened Harvard reasserted its intention of winning with an even quicker score.

Kent Parrot split the Tiger defense with a beautiful lead pass that found Dennis McCullough breaking in alone on Flanders. McCullough's shot gave the Crimson a 2-0 lead after 51 seconds of the second period.

Newton lost his chance for Harvard's first shutout of the year seven minutes later when Princeton's Mike Spence slipped the puck between the goalie and the post as he skated past the goal.

Harvard rebuilt the margin in two quick motions following a Tiger penalty at 15:35 of the middle frame. Jack Garrity directed the faceoff back to Bob Fredo and Fredo's slap shot whistled by Flanders' left elbow into the cage.

The Canadians finished the scoring 12 minutes into the third period. Miller, with Price once again providing the setup, shot from eight feet out on Flanders' left. The Princeton goalie made a diving save, but the rebound went right back to Miller, who skidded it under Flanders for the Crimson's fourth goal.

Despite his 30 saves, Newton had an easy night as Harvard controlled play most of the game.

Flanders made 36 saves for Princeton, but left countless dangerous rebounds. Harvard's four goal total is no reflection of the number of open nets the Crimson players had to shoot at.

In afternoon action at Watson Rink, the Harvard JV handed Andover its second loss of the year, 3-2.
