Fencers Shaken By SMTI Match

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard's swordsmen eked out an unconvincing victory over Southeastern Massachusetts Technical Institute Saturday in the IAB.

Harvard won the match 17-10, but both Coach Edo Marion and Captain Harry Jergesen were disappointed by the number of bouts taken by injury-ridden SMTI, a traditionally weak opponent.

"Lousy" was Jergesen's description of his team's win. "SMTI has never taken more than five bouts from us before."

Jergesen's own performance in epee was the strongest of the day. He won 5-1, 5-2. Harvard posted wins in six of nine epee bouts.

Saber Best

Saber was Harvard's best weapon Saturday. Ron Winfield slashed his way to 5-4, 5-3 victories. Bob Barnard scored 5-2, 5-1 wins and skillfully dismembered his opponent's watch in the last blow of the match.

Marion started an inexperienced foil trio of Cliff Ruderman, Art Weissman, and John Reitz. The three were outclassed by SMTI, 4-5.
