A trio-of three-point plays in the final two minutes gave the Harvard five a whopping, if unspectacular victory over Brown Saturday night in the IAB, 92-77.
Harvard's lead--once as big as 15--had been pared to six with 1:46 to go, but guard Jeff Grate (18 points) saved the win. After Bob Johnson blocked a Bruin shot, Grate took the ball all the way in on a swiveling drive. The lay-up was good and Grate made a foul shot as well.
Twenty seconds later, Grate hit again--this time on a fall-away jump shot from a few feet out, and once again he was fouled and completed a three point play. Chris Gallagher's three-pointer and Gene Dressler's two foul shots inflated the margin.
23 for Gallagher
Gallagher had a superb night, netting 23 points and taking 14 rebounds. He looked like the Gallagher of December, tipping in rebounds from strange angles and driving well. In fact, the whole Crimson squad was able to drive against the weak Brown defense. Barth Royer complemented Gallagher's inside work with 5 points; mostly on his smooth jump hot.
It was Harvard's second win against line losses, in the Ivy League, tying them with the Bruins. The Crimson travels to Yale and Brown next Friday and Saturday nights, and concludes its season on March 1 against Dartmouth in the IAB.
Cornell Tops Princeton
In other action, the previously undefeated Princeton quintet dropped a League game to Cornell Saturday night, 62-56, at Ithaca. The Big Red, led by Walt Esdaile's 17 points, have now moved into a first-place Ivy tie with the Tigers. Chris Thomforde had 23 points for the losers.
