Harvard, Yale Share League Lead, Seek to Save Undefeated Records

Harvard and Yale, New England's only unbeaten college football teams, are trying to match perfect records on their way to their traditional Ivy League windup on November 23 in Cambridge.

Harvard, improving weekly, lived up to its number two regional ranking last Saturday by knocking upstart Penn from the undefeated category, 28-6.

The Elis, the defending Ivy League champs ranked number one in the Associated Press regional poll, extended the nation's longest major college winning streak to 14 games, including six this year, by whipping Dartmouth, 47-27.

Yale and Harvard both have 6-0 records, including 3-0 marks on the Ivy circuit, and there are two games left before their showdown. Penn dropped out of a share of the League lead with its loss to Harvard.

Dowling and Hill

Brian Dowling passed for three touchdowns and scored one himself to lead Yale over the Big Green. Halfback Calvin Hill tallied twice and tossed for another. Dowling set a Yale record for total offense as he rolled up 324 yards, most by passing. Halfback Bob Lindquist scored three times for Dartmouth, New England's fifth-ranked squad.

In other Ivy action, Princeton warmed up for its game with Harvard this Saturday by squashing Brown, 50-7. Brown fumbled three times in the game to set up Tiger scores, and Princeton tallied four touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Tailback Chris Montgomery returned a kick-off 76 yards for a touchdown, and Princeton captain Dick Bracken had a 76-yard run of his own to spark the Tiger's scoring rampage.

Only TD

Halfback Tom Lemire chalked up Brown's only TD when he grabbed a pitchout from quarterback Bryan Marini and cut two yards for the second quarter score.

Columbia quarterback Marty Domres shattered four Ivy League records as he paced the Lions to a 34-25 upset victory over Cornell. Domres set a new passing record for one game (396 yards) and a total offense mark for one game (447 yards). He also boosted his career total offense figure to a record 2993 yards, and his career pass completion mark to a record 226 completions.

Cornell is now in last place in the Ivy League, along with Brown. Both teams have 0-4 records.

The Big Red will attempt to get in the win column next week against Brown, while Columbia seeks its second victory in a row, against the Big Green in Hanover. Penn hosts Yale in an attempt to keep its fading hopes for a share of the Ivy title alive.
