Racquetmen Face Cornell; Swimmers Take On Cadets

The varsity swimming team will try to avenge last year's narrow loss to Army when it goes against the Cadets in the Crimson's second meet of the season at West Point today.

Last fall, Harvard trailed the heavily favored Cadet contingent by six points with only the 400-yard freestyle relay remaining. A Crimson victory in the relay would have given the underdogs the meet by one point, but Harvard's Bill Shrout was edged by one foot in the final lap. The Crimson have not beaten Army since 1962.

Two of the top Cadets are sprinter Pete Heesch, who has done 21.6 in the 50-yard free, and Barry Kerr, who can compete in several strokes. Heesch won two freestyle events in last year's meet, and was responsible for defeating Shrout in the decisive relay. Other standouts are Fred Lough, Rick Rentz, and sophomore Jack Frink, another versatile performer.

How Hungry?

Freshman coach Benn Merritt, speaking in the absence of head coach Bill Brooks, said, "Army is strong everywhere, with balance, and they're always tough, especially at home. But we're far deeper and better than last year, and we're a hungry team." Army is Harvard's first opponent this season in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League Competition.

Harvard will be depending on strong performances from diver Bill Murphy and sophomore freestylers Steve Krausse and Mike Cahalan, all three of whom were outstanding in the squad's recent triumphs over Springfield. Murphy will be trying to win both dives for the second year in a row.
