Freshman Skiers Bolster Crimson At Madonna Mt.

The Harvard varsity ski team journeyed 350 miles Friday to take part in the St. Lawrence Carnival at Canton, New York--only to find that the rain and the heat had combined to force a cancellation of the competition there.

Undaunted, Dick Friedman, Harvard's new coach, divided his forces, sending the Nordic ski team to Middlebury, Vermont, to practice on the Middlebury College 60-meter hill. Friedman took the remainder of the squad, the Alpine men, to join the freshmen at the Madonna Mountain Carnival near Stowe, Vermont.

Class A

At Madonna, competing against 75 of the country's top class-A skiers, Harvard placed 5 team members in the top 25. Two freshman, Jay O'Rear and Alan Watson, placed sixth and thirteenth respectively to lead the Crimson showing. In the women's competition Robin Barnes, the only Cliffie to qualify for the competition, placed sixth.

On Friday the team will journey to Dartmouth for the Carnival there. This year is the first time Harvard has qualified both its freshman and varsity squads for the Carnival and has a good chance to upset perenially strong Middlebury and Dartmouth.
