Senior (R-Fla.) Loses In Dem Nomination

A Harvard senior lost his bid for nomination to the Florida delegation to the Democratic National Convention yesterday because he is not a Democrat. His candidacy for district delegate was barred at the state level.

Leonard H. Saphier '68 who was offered candidacy in the May 28 Florida primary by his Sarasota District Democratic Committee, would have run as an unpledged candidate favoring McCarthy.

But under Florida state law, candidates for the delegate primary must be registered with the party on whose slate they appear for at least one year.

Saphier said yesterday that he would encourage other McCarthy supporters to make an effort to place their names on their state convention ballots.

He said that this effort could influence the progress of the convention after the first ballot, when delegates' commitments are no longer binding.
