Durocher Rehired

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Leo Durocher was rehired yesterday as manager of the Chicago Cubs.

In recent weeks, rumors have been circulating that Cub owner Phil Wrigley would fire Durocher and hire either Ernie Banks or former Giant star Whitey Lockman. Last season the Cubs stipped to a tie for third place in the National League east with an 83-79 record.

In his six years as manager of the Cubs, Durocher has yet to produce a pennant winner. The Cubs' best chance came in 1969 when they led the New York Mets by as much as eight games in the beginning of August only to blow the lead in the stretch in September.

Durocher, who is probably most famous for his quote "nice guys finish fast," formerly managed both the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
